Almost everyone loves Italian food, and especially home cooked Italian food. Most non-Italians would love to learn the basics of family style Italian cooking, and Eva Santaguida and her husband, Harper Alexander, have put her family’s best recipes together in an excellent cookbook, The Italian Family Kitchen: Authentic Recipes That Celebrate Homestyle Italian Cooking.

The first chapters cover basics such as The Italian menu, ingredients, and pasta making. Then the recipes are divided into organized chapters covering different courses. The book includes popular Italian dishes as well as many unique ones that aren’t well-known. Most of the recipes are mouthwatering, and anyone reading this book will find the end up with a long “must make soon” queue. The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first followed by step-by-step instructions. All of the recipes are easy to follow, and while some are quite involved, most have minimal ingredients and will be made easily by beginning cooks as well as advanced. I love that there are notes at the beginning of each recipe, and they are well-written and help to understand them.

There are beautiful, professional photographs throughout, and make the recipes very tempting. However, there aren’t enough photographs and some of the recipes aren’t pictured. If there is a drawback to this cookbook, that is the only one.

All told, this is an Italian cookbook that is a cut above. It is one that almost everyone will want to include in their home recipe collection. This cookbook includes something that will appeal to everyone, even picky eaters, and dozens that will be prepared by foodies.
