English Sausage Roll Wreath Recipe

English Sausage Roll Wreath Recipe
Visit any bakery, in-store deli, or quick food market in the UK and you will notice that all feature the ubiquitous sausage roll - sausage wrapped up in a puff pastry crust. You can also purchase them in the freezer of any grocery store. Actually, they are quite good, and are the inspiration for this English Sausage Roll Christmas Wreath. Store bought puff pastry makes these a snap; your favorite sausage, mixed with a bit of onion and English mustard makes for a quick and delicious filling.

Although the wreath is best warm from the oven, the little rolls are also good at room temperature. Brushing the wreath with an egg mixed with gel paste food coloring makes the rolls festive. Add a pretty Christmas bow and cherry tomatoes for ornaments. You can make and bake this wreath ahead and heat it up just as your guests are arriving. It makes a great centerpiece for the appetizer table, and it's tasty too.

1 pound English bangers, or favorite uncured sausage, squeezed from the casings

1 egg
Green gel food coloring

cherry tomatoes

  2. Mix the sausage, onion, and mustard well.
  3. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle and cut into 12 squares; repeat with the remaining puff pastry.

  6. Beat the egg and add green gel food coloring; brush the sausage rolls with the mixture.
  7. Bake until golden brown, 20-30 minutes.
